Whenthe main story missions jump 4-6 levels (e.g. one mission is level 32, the next, level 37), so you wander off to do major side quest lines, but then those quests do the same, so now you have 3-4 storylines you've began but can't finish because all the next missions are a handful of levels above yours
Generallyin games I do a mix so it keeps things fresh. BF, like any game in the series with upgrading, rewards you for doing sidestuff first. That way you unlock power, so that you can more easily push past the level gates that are the mainquests. With those two bonuses the base game total jumps to 130. The numbers include the three new quests added post-launch as well: Here Comes a New Challenger, A Gift from the Gods and Incoming f7w5AL.
